Drag Queen Documentary Interview Reflection

On Friday, september 15th, me and my group went over to our interviewees, Gary Wright, apartment. It took a while for us to get the equipment ready for the interview. Before we started filming we decided to interview him in front of his wide window because it was a good source of natural light. We also placed a backlight behind him to create an outline and we used Brandon’s reflector board to bounce some of the sun’s light onto the darker side of Gary’s face.
I was in charge of Audio so I had to hold onto the boom mic. We used a shotgun mic during the interview so most of the audio we recorded would be from him. Before we started recording we had to turn off the apartments air conditioner because it created a lot of background noise. I before the camera started I would start recording the audio so we could have some good empty space. While we were recording I constantly had to mess with the peak meter so it wouldn’t overmodulated. I would decrease the sound to stop it from spiking.
During the recording, our director asked her listed questions and even came up with some on the fly, which I really liked. I can’t remember them all from the top of my head. We learned that interview was a teacher who liked doing drag in his spare time. He has to keep his personal life and work separate sadly. He also told us some of his personal history. Afterwards we started recording him, putting on his Drag makeup.

It was a really interesting experience.
