On Friday I went to see Anti-Porn and that was one hell of a movie. I actually had some sort of panic attack for the main character's mental state, and the little lizard in the Jar but that isn’t important. One thing I really like about the movie is how it messed with your perception of reality. The movie begins with some weird porn movie with a group of characters in a bright yellow room. As the movie went on things became more and more intense. Then, with the sound of an alarm going, it is revealed that these characters are on set. There were multiple scenes like this one where it messed with your perception of reality. First, you think the main character is some strange book author, then an amateur porn star, and then a high schooler. Unlike usual movies, you have to put the story together yourself which was very interesting because you had to figure out what the plot of the film was as you watched it. Also, it would change from one these realities to the next or reveal that one of them isn’t true.
I loved how the mise-en-scene and cinematography were handled for the movie. Also, the transitions from one scene to the next were amazing. For example, when it changed from the scene with the main abusive author persona to the porn star on set, it was very jarring. It was suddenly revealed that the main is a pornstar amateur and her secretary, which acted very submissive during filming, turns out to be an abusive actress. The roles were completely flipped, and this was the point where we see the main character’s true colors and how she feels. Then we jump to when the main is a high schooler eating lunch with her parents, who later kills herself. This is the point where we learn that the main was taught that sex, especially porn, was bad, even though her parents do it every other day. As the film jumps back and forth between these realities they start to bleed into each other, where the plot is easier to understand, but then all the realities get all jumbled up and confusing. Which, I believe, shows how the main character’s mental state was degenerating.
